Org. Setting and Reporting

The UNOOSA/UN-SPIDER Beijing Office internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension for total maximum of six months, pending on the needs of the office and availability of the intern. A minimum of two applicants will be selected, to start in mid-July to early August 2019.


The internship is unpaid and full-time.


Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:


-Provide support to the team in organising the annual UN-SPIDER Conference in Beijing. The conference will be held on 11-12 September 2019.

-Assist in organising the short training programme which will be held prior to the UN-SPIDER Annual Conference on 5-10 September 2019.

-Specific duties include processing registration information, sort out registration list, preparing invitation letter, communicating with the participants on logistic and other issues.

-Assist in preparing publications needed for the conference based on the existing reports of the work done by the UN-SPIDER Beijing Office

-Assist in formatting the documents such as information note, agenda, background board, brochure, badges etc.

-Perform other tasks as necessary.

-Communication: Ability to draft clearly and concisely, good written and oral language skills.

-Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different national and cultural backgrounds to achieve organizational goals.

-Client Orientation: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be ‘clients’ and seeks to see things from client’s point of view.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

-Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation; (OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY IN SUPPORT OF ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION)

-Be computer literate in standard software applications;

-Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

-Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English is the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
